Iron Man 3, claiming that Disney is being oversensitive.
Writer and director of Iron Man 3 Shane Black told comic website, comicbookmovie.com that the Iron Man 3 that made it to cinemas is a very different film from the story he wanted to tell.
He
said that Disney was reluctant to let him explore Tony Stark's
alcoholism in the third film of the trilogy because "mummy bloggers"
would find it distasteful.
When asked whether there was anything he wasn't allowed to put in the film he replied: "the drinking".
"Even
if you look at the websites of the mummy bloggers they say, you know,
"Watch out, mums! Tony drinks in this movie" (sic). "It's amazing.
There's one of two scenes in this movie where he picks up a drink and
it'll be in those blogs. They'll say 'watch out because he drinks'.
"It's pretty amazing because it used to be you drank all the time in movies".
Black
said he was told by Disney that Stark should be portrayed as an
"industrialist and crazy guy" but that "’Demon in a bottle stuff of I’m
being an alcoholic wouldn't really fly".
Aussie
mum Kirrily (last name withheld) told news.com.au that she “spat out her
gin and tonic laughing” when she heard that Disney had put the kibosh
on exploring issues of alcoholism.
“Does he think all that ‘demon liquor being shown’ hurt the phenomenal success of TV's Mad Men?” she asked.
“Perhaps
it would have been even more popular with the "mummy bloggers" were it
not for the boys' club - and that Peggy - drinking throughout every
episode?”
Kirrily said Black was probably using the flimsy story about Disney’s alcohol ban as an excuse for the poor script.
“I've
never seen a blog with that phrase or anything like it – ‘Watch out,
mums! Tony drinks in this movie’ - so perhaps, at best, he (or, at
least, Disney) needs to widen his blog reading circles and get with the
conversation in the real blogging world (oxymoron intended!).”

It seems like a rather ironic decision on Disney’s part considering Iron Man 3
is a film about a mad scientist and terrorist determined to take
revenge on America for its persecution of the Eastern world using an
army of robotic soldiers. But drinking is a no-no?
Fellow mummy blogger Louisa Claire told news.com.au that it was a "bizarre" decision on Disney's part because Iron Man 3 - which comes with an M rating in Australia - isn't aimed at children.
"It's
great that Disney is taking the opinions of mummy bloggers seriously,"
she said. "Their thinking was right but not well applied."
"Disney
is itself a family friendly company but it doesn't always choose family
friendly films," she said. "They need to be able to deal with that
maturely."
However, Ms Claire said that in the
past she had taken the advice of mummy bloggers when deciding what films
to take her children to. She said she gave animated children's film Brave a miss.
"I
think it' an amazing film and I'm looking forward to showing it to (my
daughter) when she's older,” she said. “I made that decision because of
mummy bloggers who had been invited to the launch and realised it wasn't
something appropriate for a girl of her age.”
Though
Black said he didn't blame Disney for their decision, it's unlikely the
rest of the internet will exercise the same compassion and restraint.
